Finally, the first release off the upcoming aforementioned collections of sounds: RPM Failures, a Collection of Collapse. This is part of an experimental set of tunes, written for the RPM Challenge under the moniker "Big Dick." I failed the Challenge (as usual), but ended up with an interesting batch of songs. This first one, "Vinyl Lullaby," attempts to capture that moment of falling asleep while listening to a record, where reality drifts away and dreams begin. Perhaps the slow rhythmic skipping at the end of the record invades your brain. And then you are tossed awake by a rude sound. It has happened to me many times.. and perhaps to you as well. If so, you know exactly what I'm talking about. I hope you enjoy it. To download, all you have to do is Tweet about it (or post it to Facebook) and then you will get the link. (This is a new service by some super-talented guys, so I hope you will support not just me and my crazy flights, but also some really cool people who are doing pretty awesome things.) You can also give a listen on SoundCloud.

So.... waaaay back in February, I participated in something called the RPM Challenge (the second for me--though I use the term "participate" loosely). Last year's effort provided fodder for the Big Lake debut EP. This year resulted in a series of experimental soundscapes with scaled-back instrumentation.. though I'm not calling it an official Big Lake project, I will start uploading them for you after the weekend. For free! All for you. xxBL

Hi folks! How are you? Good? I'm glad. That makes us happy. Oh hey! Lots of things happened / happening...

Firsty, I'd like to report that Big Lake made the Best of 2011 list on the inimitable Joe Belock's Three Chord Monte, which he hosts on WFMU. Happy happy! Thanks so much to Joe and the fine folks at WFMU for keeping independent music programming on the airwaves.

As we are busy writing new material, we are also so happy to be combining efforts with the great Tom Barrett for a new project, called Overlake. We hope to be playing out by the end of summer, so stayed tuned for dates and locations..!

.. and speaking of touring ... Big Lake was just offered a waitlist spot for a showcase at NXNE! We couldn't be more excited. We have been busy preparing and working on the new material, so we hope to bring this show to the fine folks in Canada. We love Canada. We will find out May 23 and hope to make an announcement at that point. Wish us luck!

One last note: Big Lake is now available for purchase on Google's new music portal: Google Play. Take a look, listen to the music.. you can buy, share, listen.. it's kind of cool actually. Check it out. xxBL

I can't believe it hasn't even been a month since we released the EP. It feels like a year ago! Since then, we've gotten some great reviews, made some new friends, got some radio play and started working on some new songs in the studio.

Way back in November, WFMU's Therese Mahler and Joe Belock were kind enough to include Big Lake into their programming. Though Joe usually plays some great garage / no-frills rock and roll from around the world, he was kind enough to include "Homecoming Game" on his Thanksgiving broadcast. Therese' show is more eclectic, but she made a tidy home for "Scary Things at Night" on her broadcast.. fitting, since we are from the same hometown! Thanks so much guys! Lastly, if you are familiar with Jim Testa's Jersey Beat, then you will know how proud we are to have been reviewed by Joe Wawrzyniak for his Jersey Beat blog : The World According to Wawrzyniak. Joe gives us a really nice review.

As we finish up in 2011, what can I say? We worked hard, stressed out, laughed, listened and overall just really enjoyed making this record. I'm still smiling! As we move into 2012, we will be going back in to the studio to record more tunes. We will also be finding some nice people to play with live. Looking forward to it all. As always.. thank you so much for listening. xxBL
